Module 1: Māori history – a definition
‘We walk into the future as we face the past.’
This module introduces us to a Māori definition of history, walking us through the origin stories and the phases of our history that followed, right up until today. Knowing this history is important for understanding how we have been shaped as a nation. We give context to Māori origins, the development of Māori since their arrival in Aotearoa, and the colonial period following the signing of Te Tiriti.
